Dr. Shaimaa Basha's Participation in the Workshop

Dr. Shaimaa Basha, Associate Professor of Psychology and Mental Health Consultant, participated in an important workshop titled "Mental Health in Times of Crises and Disasters," held on Sunday, October 20, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Afaaq Al Salam International Center in Dubai and the Emirates Red Crescent – Sharjah Branch, targeting staff and volunteers from the Emirates Red Crescent – Sharjah Branch.
During the workshop, Dr. Shaimaa emphasized the importance of addressing crises and disasters from a psychological perspective. She provided comprehensive insights into the mental health challenges that may be faced by first responders and workers in the field. Additionally, she presented practical strategies and tools to help individuals cope with the psychological stress and tension that arise from direct involvement in crises and disasters.
The workshop covered several key topics, including:
1.    Psychological Challenges in Crises and Disasters: Dr. Shaimaa highlighted the impact of crises on mental health, not only for those directly affected but also for frontline workers.
2.    Psychological Support Strategies: Dr. Shaimaa provided practical advice on delivering psychological support to affected individuals and emphasized the role of staff and volunteers in promoting mental health within the community.
3.    Building Psychological Resilience: The workshop addressed the importance of building high psychological resilience among humanitarian workers, enabling them to manage difficult situations and maintain their mental well-being.
4.    Importance of Self-Care: Dr. Shaimaa stressed the significance of self-care for workers and volunteers to ensure the sustainability of humanitarian efforts in challenging environments.
The workshop saw significant engagement from attendees, with staff and volunteers sharing their personal experiences in handling crises. This added a practical dimension to the workshop. At the end of the session, attendees expressed their appreciation for Dr. Shaimaa Basha and praised the efforts of the Afaaq Al Salam Center and the Emirates Red Crescent for organizing such a valuable workshop.
